Statement of LISABETH A. GIFFORD, Candidate for
Member, City Council
Occupation: Self-Employed Independent Paralegal
Age: 58
Education and Qualifications:
Attended Purdue University with a journalism major. Was employed by a
Gilroy attorney for eighteen years prior to starting an independent
paralegal home-based business in 1994. Worked for Gavilan College in
the early 1970's.
A thirty year Gilroy resident, married, mother of four adult children
and grandmother of two.
I am proud to have campaigned for Supervisor Don Gage, Councilmen Mike
Gilroy and Tom Springer, and School Trustee Jane Howard, as well as
being an organizer of citizens against the proposed storm drain tax in
1995.
Though progress is inevitable, I feel recent growth in Gilroy has been
over-powering and needs to be curtailed.
I am for filtering pornography on the library's internet to protect
children and for sex offenders' names being available to the public.
If elected, I would actively pursue an investigation of our police
department's policies and procedures. I am a proponent of the new golf
course and the retention of the existing golf course. I endorse new
businesses using existing facilities. I support revitalizing of our
downtown section, as well as First Street.
My basic platform is elected officials are employees of the taxpayers
and should never be accountable to special interest groups.
