I have been involved in community service my entire adult life. After finishing Law School at the University of Maryland in 1976, I moved to Oakland to work as a Jesuit Volunteer. I began my community involvement by taking a postion with the Oakland Community Organizations. In 1986, I helped create United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County to advocate for better senior services, such as housing and transportation. As Executive Director of the United Seniors of Oakland, I am responsible for managing the affairs of the organization, training and developing leadership among the elderly, which enables them to address their specific needs in regards to safety, adequate transportation and other areas of concern. The seniors and I have built this viable organization over 14 years of consistent and tenacious efforts. I was elected to the Oakland City Council in 1990. In my role as Councilmember, I am the Chair of the Public Safety Committee. Some of my special projects include violence suppression, harm reduction, problems regarding alcohol outlets and other public health issues. I have initiated programs to clean up neighborhood blight, sponsored the lead abatement program, sponsored legislation to stem redlining in Oakland and encourage local investment in the neighborhoods, supported community-oriented policing with the first local substation and worked to reform public housing. I am also single father of two children and has lived in Oakland for more than 19 years. On March 7th, please elect me your Supervisor. |
