Create Support Systems for Youth and Seniors

By Maria Y. Ferrer

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of San Jose; District 2

This information is provided by the candidate
Although most of a Council Member's time is taken up with land use issues, I believe a Council Member can have a tremendous impact on the support services offered by City programs to our children and families.

Our biggest challenge is to improve the skills gap which is preventing our children from being ready for the jobs that will be available in the future, and to bridge the digital divide.

Local businesses currently spend $3 billion dollars a year bringing technicians from elsewhere to do the jobs that exist locally. We should be investing that money on the children who are already here.

As Council Member I will work to increase after school programs focusing on math, science, technology, and the arts.

We must create prevention strategies to reduce child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse, and youth violence.

Elder abuse, physical and ecoomic/financial is rampant in our District and must be stopped. I will partner with Police, County, medical, and other regional staff to develop a comprehensive plan to deal with this abuse.
