Congestion and gridlock need to address immediately! This has been a topic of discussion for over 10 years. Plans have been developed and redeveloped since the Bakersfield "Plan of 2010". We need to do something now. If we broke ground tomorrow a system would not be finished until 2007. Think about that? We will have another 50,000 residence by then. Are we prepared? This to me is more important then a downtown civic center. We cannot sit around and wait any longer. There have been some short term and long term solutions. But, we need to act, fast! Some of the short term solutions. 1) Widen some of the roads: Stockdake Highway, Rosedale Highway,23rd, and 24th street. 2) Synchronizing lightsd during peek traffic hours. Eliminate cross traffic during the rush hours. 3) Prohibit commercial traffic during these peak hours. 4) Stagger work schedules. 5) Car pool 6) Utilize the GET bus system. Some of the long term solutions: These hinge on the report being compiled by URS Greiner for Kern Council of Government. This will provide the best possible solutions through all freways, connector routes, and incorporating our Rapid Transit Systems. We have to get our head out of the sand.......We need to make tough choices, now ! Otherwise we are going to be spending two hours in traffic for the rest of our lives here in Bakersfield. |
