Political Philosophy for Ted Brown

I believe that government should get off our backs and out of our lives. Politicians and bureaucrats treat us like children needing guidance. I and other Libertarians want to treat you like an adult and leave you alone to live your life as you see fit. Both Democratic and Republican politicians raise your taxes, increase government spending and seek to interfere in just about every aspect of your life -- both personal and economic. Only Libertarians want to cut back the size of government. I want to go to Washington to repeal laws, not pass new ones. The U. S. Constitution give limited power to the federal government. These powers include national defense, patents and copyrights, the post office and a few others. It says nothing about education, transportation, housing, health care, or hundreds of other functions the feds have taken on over the last century. I would eliminate all agencies and functions not allowed by the Constitution. This would cut out at least 75% of the federal budget, and will allow us to repeal the income tax and abolish the dreaded IRS. Alcohol prohibition didn't work in the 1920's and drug prohibition doesn't work today. The War on Drugs is wrecking our society far worse than the drugs themselves. Almost 2 million Americans are in prison, more than half of them for non-violent offenses like selling marijuana. Adults should be allowed to put any substance into their bodies that they want -- without being thrown in jail by power-seeking politicians, bureaucrats and police officials. The drug war has caused the trashing of some of our most basic constitutional rights, and has led to police corruption and street violence. We must decriminalize all drugs, starting with medical marijuana. People in other countries burn the American flag and chant, "Death to the Great Satan." We should not be the Great Satan. We must stop interfering in disputes all over the world where we have no business. The purpose of the U. S. military is to defend our country. Instead, we have troops stationed in 100 countries around the world. President Clinton started a war against Yugoslavia, a country that is no threat to the U. S. and never has been. We must bring all our troops home and return to the non-interventionist foreign policy that brought us such success in the 19th Century. |
