When I asked for your vote two years ago, I promised to commit my full time and experience to Palo Alto issues. As a councilmember I've been doing just that, spending an average of 40-50 hours each week on City business. In addition to Council meetings, I serve as a liaison or member on these Boards, Commissions and organizations:

  • Policy and Services Committee
  • California Avenue Area Development Association
  • City/School Liaison Committee
  • Avenidas Senior Center
  • Neighbors Abroad
  • Council Appointed Officers Committee
  • Santa Clara Valley Water District Advisory Group
  • Silicon Valley Community Communications (SVCC)
  • Historic Resources Board
  • And as an alternate to the Parks & Recreation Commission, Downtown Marketing Association, and the San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority.

Creating a sustainable, livable, and vital Palo Alto is my first priority. That includes making sure that the City's infrastructure-- streets, parks, and facilities-- are renewed. But it also means speaking out against the idea that "bigger is always better." Sustainable to me means fighting to retain open space, promoting "green" buildings and renewable energy, protecting our environment, and working hard for new initiatives-- the library master plan, expanding the shuttle, and creating housing for teachers and city workers. It also means looking for new innovations and incentives to help solve problems with traffic and residential development.

Here's what I've learned: The services offered to our residents are far superior and more extensive than almost any other city. There are literally hundreds of dedicated volunteers involved in providing these services. The City of Palo Alto is blessed with an outstanding, professional staff. Palo Alto also has many needs, many excellent new projects, and more work to be done than money to do it with. But we're gaining on it and I hope to continue to speak out for a Palo Alto that is worthy of all its citizens.
