Melanie Bates' Mjor Goals for the Cincinnati Public SchoolsBy Melanie BatesCandidate for Board Member; Cincinnati City School District | |

If elected, I will work to implement two major reforms. They are as follows...1) Cincinnati Public Schools has developed high academic content standards for students and an accountability system to determine how well the students master those standards. What CPS has not done is to develop a comprehensive districtwide professional development plan to ensure that all of our teachers have the support and the ongoing training so they are well prepared to teach to these rigorous academic standards. A strategic paln for student academic success must be the next order of business for the School Board. The bottom line in school reform is the quality of the teacher in each child's classroom. 2) Cincinnati students currently have access to a piecemeal system of vocational education, yet their suburban counterparts have access to state of the art programming in this area. I would work to ensure that the rapid implementation of career and technical (vocational) education takes place so students who want to specialize in the trades and technical careers have that opportunity in Cincinnati Public Schools. |
