Education, training, life-experience and family.

• Bernice James was born in Los Angeles and attended public schools in the San Fernando Valley.

• She obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Arizona at age 30 while raising three daughters.

• Subsequently, she took the multi-part Certified Public Accountant exam, passing all four parts at her first sitting.

• Bernice has been recognized by the Institute for Pension Funds as a Certified Pension Executive after completion of their program at George Washington University. In addition she has completed many other classes and training programs on finance, investment policy, tax law, retirement plan operation and government administration.

• Bernice has lived in the area for 22 years.

Even as a working single mother she has found time to be active in the community. Some of her contributions include:

• As an AARP volunteer preparing income tax returns for the elderly and low-income.
• Working at New Beginnings Counseling Center.
• Helping to allocate scholarships to needy students funded by the American Society of Women Accountants.
• Serving as a United Way volunteer.
• Helping to establish a day-care center for children of college students.
• Volunteering with the "Green Parade of Buildings."

Bernice lives in Santa Barbara with one daughter who is enrolled at UCSB. A second daughter is obtaining her degree in Bilingual Education (Spanish-English) from the University of New Mexico. Her third daughter lives in Solvang and also attends UCSB while raising two children.
