Public Service: As Consultant to the City of San Diego's Public Service and Neighborhood Services Committee from 1997-98, Robert Tambuzi: Served as Special Assistant for Community Affairs to Councilman Stevens to organize and staff ten Neighborhood Councils-1992-97; Supervised the District 4 field representatives-1992-97; Initiated a community development improvement plan for the Mt. Hope neighborhood that included much-needed improvements to the city-owned cemetery; Raised funds for the annual Fourth District Arts and Cultural Festival; Led the community-wide effort to rename Ozark Street "Wilie James Jones Avenue" following the tragic death of this Lincoln High School honor student/athlete; Initiated and staffed public hearings that showed discrimination in city contracting that impacted women and people of color; Initiated City of San Diego regulations to have trigger locks placed on all firearms sold or transferred; Worked with the San Diego Fire Department and American Medical Services to create the highly successful public-private Emergency Medical Services Transport system; Worked to create the Public Lighting Ordinance, which replaces the dull low-sodium street light with high-sodium light, making our streets safer at night; and worked with the City Attorney's Office to create a Pay Phone Proliferation Ordinance geared to eliminate loitering in and around "hot spots" in the City. Community Service: Serves on the County of San Diego's Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program; Member, Central Regional Alliance's Ad Hoc Committe for Affordable and Accessible Housing; Lincoln Park Wellness Advisory Committee; Black American Political Action Committee; San Diego County's Cold Weather Shelter Program Committee; Trainer for the Leadership Training Institute of the Chicano Federation; Alumnus of LEAD San Diego-1990; Organizer for Save The Dream March advanced by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, an organizing tool to defeat Proposition 226, the anti-labor initiative; Member, City of San Diego Citizen's Commission on Community Development Block Grants; Worked on the Hilltop Middle School African American Student/Parent Committee; Chair of US Organization, San Diego Chapter 1986-98; Appointed by Community College Board Trustee Denise Moreno Ducheny to the San Diego City College Advisory Committee; and, appointed by California State Assemblywoman Denise Moreno Ducheny to the 79th District Census 2000 Task Force. Education: Graduated from Lincoln High School, 1971; Journalism major at San Diego City College; and, Communication and Sociology major at the University of California San Diego. Professional Experience: Serves as Co-Director for Project New Village, a community based collaboration established in 1994 to focus on family support and community development in Southeastern San Diego. Project New Village includes the Family Support and Preservation Program, the Lincoln Park Wellness Village Project and the Childcare Coalition. Serves as Co-Director at Children Having Children, Inc., a teen pregnancy prevention program, whose mission is to strengthen the values, life skills and aspirations of young people. Personal Information: Tambuzi has been married for seventeen years to Aminisha Tambuzi, co-founder and choreographer of the Teye Sa Thiosanne African Drum & Dance Company. He is the father of six children and has eight grandchildren. Tambuzi is a lifelong resident of San Diego and has lived in the Fourth District for thirty-five years. He is a homeowner and lives with his family in the Skyline community. |
