Candidate for
Mayor; City of Del Rey Oaks

As stated in my biographical background I have served on the city council since 1984. This has given me insights into our city and the need to reassess as we move forward in development of our city.

It is my hope if elected mayor to to reevaluate and reassess our present position in planning the development of the former Fort Ord property. Public input is essential and town hall type meetings. These meetings need to be schedule to make the public aware of the problems that the city faces. If it comes out in the newspaper it is usually to late.

The development of this property and addressing the water and service issues of this valuable piece of property is essential for stabilizing our economy. As we continue to pursue of the release of the property we must secure a partnership with a developer, who can go the distance. Presently we have lost valuable time by the withdrawal of two developers who could not stay the course and did not have the financial backing to see the proposed project through.

The withdrawal of these developers presents a problem given the state of the economy investors are reluctant to invest in such a costly project as being proposed. This is the reason why I suggest that we take the time to reevaluate the present project and present some alternates that may allow development in stages. Once the property is released by the military and signed off by the State of California a developer would be allowed to develop portions of the property. This in turn would genrate needed revenue for the fiscal stability of the city.

Water continues to be a major problem source for the city in its development. This issue truly needs to be dealt with as the city presently has very little water left for such a large project. We are in the early stages of developing water sources that may be beneficial in the development, but lack the monetary resources to develop them. This does not preclude us from the development of smaller projects that do not require as much water. These projects would buy the city time and generate revenue to aid in the larger projects.

Quality of life in the city is essential. We cannot have quality of life without development for it is the revenue generated by this development that provides improvements to the city's infrastructures. Roadways, Parks, City Services, Employee Saleries and Benefits continue to errode, development is vital for the survival of the city. What is dramatic is that we cannot stop change or development, but we can mold that change and development to fit the need of our city.

Traffic is another related issue that needs to be monitored as the Cities of Monterey, Seaside and the Airport District continue to impact the our city. We need to be aware of these impacts and mitgate them to the best of our ability.

I am asking for your support as I am willing to commit myself to the leadership that will be needed over the next several years to work though these issues.
