REVISION TO THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST ETHICS POLICY:By Lance MacLeanCandidate for Council Member; City of Mission Viejo | |

Represent the community's interests NOT special interests by revising the city conflict of interest ethics policy.Federal, state and local jurisdictions have adopted sound conflict of interest policies that clearly define the prohibition of post-employment activity of former public officials and employees. Mission Viejo, on the other hand, has yet to adopt a "revolving door" policy that restricts the practice of government officials "cashing in" on their public service by leaving public office and receiving lucrative contracts from their former friends and associates or going to work for the same special interests who were seeking favors from them while they were in office. A sound revolving door policy would provide for a time restriction of a two to three year ban on working for or lobbying to create a "cooling-off" period for former government officials with easy access to the halls of government. By adopting a revolving door policy in Mission Viejo we can restore ethics to city government and eliminate the potential for serious abuse of the public trust. "A free society depends upon a high degree of mutual trust. The public will not give that trust to officials who are not seen to be impartially dedicated to the general public interest, nor will they give trust to those high in government who violate the rule of law they ask citizens to obey at the expense of self-interest, or to those who present government as the place where on feathers his own nest, exchanges favors with friends and former associates, and takes good care of those who provide the campaign contributions for the next election."
