Supporting Business in a Downturn Economy
It is imperative that we do whatever we can to support our local businesses. The economic downturn of the last year is placing a strain on businesses to stay afloat.
Passing ordinances at this time that place undue burdens on our businesses will only cause further harm. These businesses form the foundation of our tax base. It is in the communities best interest to do what ever we can to help the businesses to prosper. The city can do a lot to help promote those businesses that have shown their own commitment to the community.
Help with advertising and promotions and special events that can attract more customers would be a welcome change. New ideas for mass transit can help bring more people into the area and make the businesses more attractive.
Tax breaks for the short term is another way that cities can help these businesses. The net effect is that a business that prospers will generate more tax revenue over the long run, insure jobs in the local area, and make the economic recovery happen sooner to the local region.
