Candidate for
Council Member; City of San Fernando

This information is provided by the candidate

Nury Martinez was born, raised and educated in the Northeast Valley. Her Mom worked as a seamstress and then as a factory worker at Price Pfister # helping to organize hunger strikes to protest the closure of the plant in 1996. Her father worked as a dishwasher for 20 years and as a painter at Fadal Engineering.

Nury's parents worked hard to make sure she received a great education. Nury graduated from Pacoima Elementary; Maclay Middle School, and San Fernando High School where she helped organize community support for a UTLA teacher's strike in 1989. She attended California State University at Northridge, graduating with a degree in Political Science in 1996.

Nury Martinez has an impressive history of community involvement and accomplishments.

District Director, State Senator Richard Alarcón (1998-2003) As District Director, Nury has assisted in obtaining:

- $50 million for community health clinics, including $500,000 to the Northeast Valley Health Corporation for new radiology lab and equipment;
- $2.7 million from Department of Parks and Recreation for a San Fernando Park swimming pool; and
- $4 million to expand Los Angeles Mission College;

Healthcare Advocate, Northeast Valley Health Corporation, San Fernando Clinic. Where she did HIV testing and counseling and educational outreach to local schools and community centers and ran support groups for women living with HIV.

- Elected Member, Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee

- Past President, Comision Femenil of the San Fernando Valley

- Past Vice President, S F Valley Mexican American Political Association

- Active in numerous Democratic campaigns

Nury has worked with San Fernando residents on the Cesar Chavez Memorial Project, Las Palmas Senior Center expansion project and efforts to improve the Maclay corridor and implement a Living Wage ordinance.
