Political Philosophy for Susan Leal

My guiding principal is opportunity. My parents were working class immigrants from Mexico. My father was a day laborer who became a union boilermaker. Neither of them graduated from high school, but they taught me that this was a City of openness and opportunity for all. They lived the American Dream through their children. As the daughter of Mexican immigrants, as a woman, a Latina, a lesbian, this City has given me opportunities that I could find nowhere else in the world. Rapidly, I see those opportunities for people like my family slipping away in our city. I'm running to give that opportunity back to the city I love. I'm running to preserve that opportunity for all San Franciscans # the opportunity to hold a good job, the opportunity for a quality education, a clean environment, safe streets, an affordable home and a better life. 1. Best Qualified for Tough Times · City Treasurer since 1998; I manage SF's $3 billion investment portfolio · Board of Supervisors 1993 # 1998; chaired Finance Committee & balanced budget · I am a businesswoman who grew a startup into a public company that employs hundreds today. · Counsel to U.S. House of Representatives & California Assembly Committees · Graduate of Presentation High School, UC Berkeley, UC Boalt Hall Law School · First generation Mexican-American and native San Franciscan 2. Record of Effectiveness · As Treasurer, my investment decisions earn the highest return-on-investment of any major county. · As Treasurer, I instituted the state's first "socially-responsible" investment policies. · As Treasurer, I cracked down on tax fraud and increased collection of delinquent revenues by 400%. · I reformed and revitalized the Treasurer's Office, increasing accountability, productivity and customer satisfaction. · As Supervisor, I co-authored domestic partners bill, banned "junk guns," initiated "on demand" drug treatment, authored "MUNI riders bill of rights" and expanded childcare. 3. Experienced and Independent · I will apply my financial skills, business experience and investment savvy to close our budget gap and grow city revenues. · I'll restore confidence in City Hall by appointing only qualified department heads and holding city government accountable. · I will turn our local economy around, retaining and attracting business, growing our tax base to fund vital services and investing in affordable housing and quality schools for San Franciscans. |
