Position Papers
Student Achievement has improved
Over the past four years, student acheivement in the district has risen. Two of our high schools, Woodside and Menlo Atherton now rate 10 out of 10 on the API (Academic Performance Index). Clear focus, understanding the importance of test scores, curricular alignment with new content standards and excellent teaching have all resulted in improved academic achievement in the Sequoia District.
We need to increase choice and academic rigor
Entrance into four-year colleges and universities is getting more competitive every year. We need to increase the number of AP (Advanced Placement) courses we offer and increase the academic rigor for those students "in the middle" so that they are better prepared for college.
Immigrant students must learn English
Over the past four years, the number of immigrant students whose first language is not English have entered our schools in dramatic numbers. We must make sure that all our efforts are focused on the acquisition of English language skills to give these students the opportunity to successfully compete in an English-language based economy.
