1. How would you implement your top priority?

Answer from Debra McCarthy:
Flooding: Newtown is subject to recurring flooding from heavy rains which is causing damage to homes and property in the village. I would establish a task force to analyze the problem and recommend solutions to protect homeowners and businesses.
Safety Services: I will continue to work closely with the police and fire departments for the village to ensure that Newtown residents continue to receive high levels of service and protection.
Answer from Barry Phillips:
Implementing my top priority will actually begin during my campaign launch. I intend to visit the village businesses and develop a list of concerns and ideas that will help to solidify a mutual working relationship between local government and corporate Newtown.
Answer from Susan Short-Barnard:
By representing the majority of the people not special interests or personal agendas, I would like to get the people involved more in the life of the Village. This will happen as the people understand they have a Village Council who listens and is committed to being a government for the people.

2. Numerous important issues including transportation, land use planning, housing and economic development for the Greater Hamilton County regions are being deliberated by OKI's Land Use Commission and Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission and Planning Partnership COMPASS; how engaged should local government be in these planning activities? If elected, how would you participate in these planning activities?

Answer from Barry Phillips:
Newtown should especially be engaged in such activities in light of the fact that the village is a major thoroughfare for commuters. I would participate by becoming involved or a member of one or more of the committees mentioned.
Answer from Debra McCarthy:
Local municipalities must be included in regional planning activities. If elected I would provide leadership in areas such as flood control and drainage, transportation planning, economic development, and greenspace management. Issues such as these are critically important to the quality of life and growth in Newtown and the region.
Answer from Susan Short-Barnard:
I believe that local government needs to be 100% involved so the place you live doesn't become and absolute place where there use to be a community (i.e.) Fort Washington, Plainville.

3. Ohio Department of Natural Resources in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Recycling Coalition conducted a state-specific study and found recycling businesses in Ohio generated $650.6 million dollars in state government revenue. If elected how would you promote recycling and support recycling programs currently in place in your community to reduce solid waste generation?

Answer from Debra McCarthy:
To encourage proper disposal of hazardous waste, I would promote the use of a hazardous waste disposal program four times a year to collect dangerous chemicals. To reduce the impact of solid waste on landfills, I would create a pickup program for discarded Christmas trees that would be turned into mulch by the village. I would also create a Fall leaf pickup program so that they would not end up in landfills.
Answer from Susan Short-Barnard:
To adhere to the programs that we already have and following through with implementing the fines we can charge by anyone not adhering to the Village Ordinances. We could also have community clean-up days when Village could help residents get rid of waste or large items not normally picked up.
Answer from Barry Phillips:
While our village currently has a recycling program in place, I would, of course, support it 100%. However, I would also suggest a village-wide "recyclables collection day" for unusual/larger items that might not be collected under normal circumstances.
