The Road to Education

I am a native of the Tri-Valley. I graduated from Livermore High School in 1969. In 1977, as a newly divorced mother of two children, I needed to find a job. I did not imagine I would find a career and a lifetime love of learning.

I enrolled at the Chabot College-Valley Campus, now Las Positas College. I received counseling (thank you again Dee and George Anna) and encouragement. Instead of just finding a job, I was training for a career. I was provided every opportunity for progress and success with the small class sizes, first class faculty, staff and administrators, and state of the art facilites.

While a student, I worked as a student assistant in the computer lab and then as an instructional aid in the Business Lab. I continued to work at Las Positas College as an instructional aide while I completed my BS in Accounting at California State University Hayward. After graduating and obtaining my CPA license, I returned to Las Positas College as a part-time hourly instructor in Accounting, Business Math, PC Dos and Lotus. I completed my MBA at Golden Gate University in 1994. I was elected to the Chabot-Las Positas Board of Trustees in 1996. I think quite a history for someone with only a high school education. I owe many of my personal and most of my professional successes to Las Positas College.

Leadership Opportunities

As a Trustee for the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, I served as Secretary of the Board in 1998 and President of the Board in 1999.

While on the Board, I had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. to lobby for additional funding for the District and increases to student grants. I've attended conferences sponsored by the Association of Community College Trustees to share ideas and learn new techniques for improving the success of our District.

I joined the Tri-Valley Exchange Club in 1986 and served as President of the Club in 1991. During my year as President, we

  • Sponsored the Search for Talent for local youth
  • Sponsored Youth of the Year at the local high schools
  • Organized the Alameda County Fair Parade
  • Raised funds for local and national child abuse prevention projects
  • Gave away 15,000 U.S. flags during the Fair Parade
  • Honored local residents and businesses for proudly flying the U.S. flag.
  • Sponsored the Community Awards Luncheon recognizing local fire, police and emergency service officers
  • Sponsored a Halloween party for educationally handicapped children at Donlon School
  • Participated in the toy drive with Dublin Fire District
  • Sponsored the "Call in to Santa"
  • Dedicated the "Freedom Shrine" at the Pleasanton Superior Court

I was elected to the National Exchange Club Board in 1996 and served a three year term including one year as the President of the Sierra Pacific District representing Northern California and Nevada.

I served on the Pleasanton Valley Swim Club Board as Treasurer for nine years from 1991 to 2000. During that period, we rebuilt the main building and began to beautify the pool grounds.

I am the Finance Elder for the First Presbyterian Church in Livermore and a member of Session. This is my third three year term.

Family

I have lived in Pleasanton since 1982. My husband, Max, and I have twin boys Matthew and Jackson who were born in March. Our family also includes:

  • Son Jeff, a graduate of Las Positas
  • Daughter Carolyn, a student at Las Positas
  • Son Patrick 2004 graduate of Amador High School

We also have a son Don and his wife Michelle who live in Pleasanton and two grandchildren, Trevor and Auburn Turner who attend Donlon Elementary School.
