BIOGRAPHY FOR ROY NAKADEGAWA

ROY NAKADEGAWA, retired, 5/91, as City Traffic Engineer. Worked over 45 years in Public Works, Transit, Transportation, and served on many other Public positions. Experienced in planning, design, construction and maintenance and especially in transportation and transit in last 35 years. Widely traveled reviewing Transport and Land Use of all major cities in US, Canada, Japan, and W. Germany; visited Vienna, Salzburg, Copenhagen, Denmark; Stockholm, Boras, Malmo, Goteborg, Madrid, Barcelona, London, Paris, Lyon, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Porto Alegre; Buenos Aires, Santiago, Mexico City, and many cities in Peoples Republic of China and other developing countries. Has written and made numerous presentations.

For my BART elections I have been endorsed by notable academics, two who were past Chair of the Transportation Research Board; Emeritus Professor Wm Garrison and Professor Martin Wachs. Also endorsed by Professors E. Deakin, J. Landis, G. Newell, and M. Webber of UC Berkeley; C. Lave of UC Irvine; E. Bossard of San Jose SU; and S. Lewis of CSU of Hayward; Wolf Homberger Retired Senior Reseacher and Lecturer UCB.

Most environmental groups, progressive political leaders and organizations, and transit groups also endorsed me. November 2000, I garnered the highest vote (91,000+) of 5 BART races and spent less than a penny per vote.

Most all my current and past work since retirement has been as consultant with groups such as with National Transit Cooperative Research Projects serving on their oversight committees on 4 published reports, with community groups pro-bono such as sucessfully opposing the Berkeley Waterfront Shopping Center Development and Widening of Hearst Street, the advised City of El Cerrito for a Bus Shuttle in lieu of BART Parking. I work with Coalition Groups on advising them of cost effective transit that provides as convenient and more accessible service with major emphasis on local cities to adjust zoning and land use to integrates land use to transit oriented developments.

In general I believe the politicians and the public are unaware of the problems we keep creating and have created with the current and proposed programs. I have continually written to media with Opinions and Letters on transit about this. Much is to inform and educate the public about the problems of congestion and what we should consider.
