Affordable HousingBy Bruce GregoCandidate for City Council Member; City of South Lake Tahoe | |

There has been inadequate planning for housing in our community. When housing units are taken out of service for their precious sewer permits and used for building timeshares, our community loses. While there has been some effort to build some affordable housing, it has been too little too late. It is a sobering thought that as our children graduate from high school that they cannot afford to live on their own in their home town. As the mass exodus of our citizens continues, again our city coffers are being hit by less sales tax being paid at grocery stores, utilities and shops. Our schools are closing due to lack of funding based upon student numbers. The restrictions on building and development have gotten so stringent, that no average citizen is willing to pay the price to build. Yet those with unlimited monies can pay "mitigation fees" for land coverage and other inconsistencies. There is something wrong when the average family cannot add on another bedroom for their growing family, or convert a garage into a bedroom and developers can build monstrous buildings with 90% coverage as long as they pay a fine. Housing is something I feel very strongly about. We need to change some of our land use policies. If elected, I plan to address this issue with great energy until a solution is found. |
