Times-Standard newspaper 10/21/2004 Editorial endorsement:
"Michael Machi brings four years'experience helping the council in controversial debates on everything from public restrooms to affordable housing to the role of local goverments in national politics. If re-elected, he'll be the most senior member of the council, lending some institutional knowledge to the novices.
"But that continuity isn't the only reason we supoport him. Machi is a moderate on an often left-leaning council, ably representing voices that sometimes get lost in the din. He's been instrumental as the council liaison to Humboldt State University, working alongside HSU President Rollin Richmond to restore previously fractured relations between the city and the university. He thoroughly does his homework on public policy. On a council where "people skills" are even more crucial than in other cities, he deals with impassioned and sometimes angry constituents respectfully and civilly, hearing out all sides of an issue".
