Candidacy StatementBy Mike GlasscockCandidate for Director; Cordova Recreation and Park District | |

Rancho Cordova became a city because the citizens wanted to have a voice in how our community would be shaped. Now that we have achieved cityhood, the General Plan for our city is well underway. I believe that recreation and parks should be a major part of that plan.
The Cordova Recreation and Park District (CRPD) is jointly planning with the Rancho Cordova City Council to make parks an important part of Rancho Cordova. I feel this is extremely important for the continued well-being and growth of our city. CRPD envisions small neighborhood parks, 1/4 to 1/2 mile apart, spread throughout the new developments. The small parks will be connected by landscaped parkways, allowing people to walk, jog or bike from park to park. CRPD plans to put a park next to each new school so that children will be able to bike to school via parkways, assuring less exposure to cars and traffic on their way to and from school. This is an ambitious but necessary plan if we are to have the beautiful city we all want.
The cities of Roseville and Elk Grove are already adopting plans to include neighborhood parks and parkways in their new developments. Rocklin and Folsom have also added some nice amenities to their communities. If we do not act now, we may not be able to turn the tide of urban blight in the future. We cannot and must not allow developers to cram our city full of low-cost housing, leaving us with the minimum amount of green space allowable. The City of Rancho Cordova needs more large tree, trails, open space, recreational facilities, and small and large parks suitable for leisure activities, baseball, soccer and other sports. These things will elevate our property values and our quality of life.
If elected, I will work toward this vision by advocating for CRPD to the City, County and State Governments. I will also work to renovate and up-grade existing parks, youth sports fields and our golf course and aquatic center.
The City of Rancho Cordova is a very culturally diverse city. We need facilities for community recreation and activities so that we can continue to build goodwill among our citizens. If elected, I will search for new sources of revenue and income for our park system so we can build facilities that will benefit all in our community. I hope I will have your vote on November 2 for Cordova Recreation and Park District Board of Directors. |
