A Revitalized Town CenterBy Neville ConnellCandidate for Board Member; Alpine Community Planning Area | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Alpine has become a beautiful town. Our homes decorate the hillsides in a colorful and attractive patchwork, our climate is second to none, and our air-quality, once destroyed by smog generated by our neighbors, has improved to the point where we have the best air quality in the County for 90% of the year. But our town center has not kept pace. Before Highway 8 was built, Alpine suffered the same fate as many small towns in the west. The country roads through their centers were progressively widened to speed up the increasing amounts of through traffic. The result today is that our town center is divided by a "throughway" even though Highway 8 now serves that purpose. So now is the time to create a new cohesive plan for Alpine Boulevard and Tavern Road with traffic flow that encourages business and provides an attractive center for our fine town. |
