Public Safety-By John HoffmanCandidate for Council Member; City of Oceanside | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The City of Oceanside deserves the best police and fire departments we can afford.Simply put, public safety is a life-and-death matter. If we want to save lives and provide a safe community for people to live and work, we must hire and retain the best police officers and firefighters possible and supply them with the best, most modern equipment. Today those words ring hollow in Oceanside. We are not competitive in terms of pay and benefits for our police and fire departments when compared with other departments in the area, and senior officers and fire officials--our best, most knowledgeable people--are leaving to join other departments where the equipment works properly and the pay allows them to own a home in the community where they serve. Our poor economic situation prohibits us from solving these issues. Poor leadership in council has allowed us to miss opportunities that would have reduced response times and lack of imagination has allowed the issues to worsen. |
