Ann's Priorities

By Ann B. Pierce

Candidate for Board Member; Alpine Union School District; Full Term

This information is provided by the candidate
Increasing and shifting demands are being made on public education. As your board member I will work to respond to these challenges while keeping learning a meaningful and enjoyable experience for both students and staff.

Our district has enjoyed a long history of student success, but there is always room to improve. I support our district's focus on our Strategic Plan as a means to move us toward greater student achievement. I applaud our dedicated teachers in their efforts to identify essential standards and explore new instructional strategies. I appreciate their willingness to `delve into data' and work within new domains.

I have spent numerous hours in classrooms and have observed the truly effective teacher phenomena of `connection' with students. Connection enables staff to stimulate, motivate and inspire successful learning. I will work to retain a place in the educational framework for teacher autonomy.

Much is happening in the world today and it reflects upon feelings, attitudes and issues that students bring to school with them. My continuing education in the Masters program at SDSU puts me in a unique position to advocate on behalf of students and their well-being.

The role of the school board is three-fold: to set direction, provide support and ensure accountability. The essence of board success is in a "we" not "I" focus. I am a team player and have no focus or agenda other than providing the best educational opportunities and preparing our kids to be the leaders of tomorrow.

I truly appreciate your support.
