Esther was born and raised in Oceanside, graduating from Oceanside High in 1974. She served as San Luis Rey Fiesta Princess in 1973 and 1974, and G.I. Forum Princess in 1973. Esther's dad, Luis Sanchez, came to Oceanside in 1938, when he was 8 years old. His family, consisting of his parents, 6 brothers and 1 sister came to Oceanside from Texas. Luis married Carolina in 1954. Family, work, and religious values have always been important in the Sanchez family. Working hard to provide a better life for their children, Luis and Carolina Sanchez encouraged Esther to pursue college. Esther was identified as a mentally gifted minor in high school. She received a scholarship to Brown University, where she received a B.A. in Urban Studies. It was during her first year at Brown that Esther began her interest and work in politics, becoming a community leader. Esther went on to receive her J.D. from Hastings College of Law in 1986, where she served as student body treasurer and student representative on the student/faculty committee on admissions policy. She has been practicing law for 18 years, continuing her commitment to serving the public.
