Political Philosophy for Michael Winn

We who love this place are concerned about losing this iconoclastic collection of authentic, and often, modest architectural expression to a future of gated mansions, tourists and traffic jams. How do we solve the problems caused by the pressure of increasing land value and external development, and preserve the village scale without sacrificing fairness, diversity and equality? We must envision a future Del Mar based on principles of equality, fair play, respect for others and for the environment, and a commitment to those who will follow--our children and their children. In that framework, everything we do will work, and we may need to change very little. Without this view, there is strife and aggravation. If you look, upsets at city hall are created by city policies and their administration. Village preservation has come to mean village regulation. This approach to governance cripples our ability to effectively address external problems. Just imagine a Del Mar without cars congesting our streets, Without driving 3 miles out of your way to avoid fairgrounds traffic, Without punishing regulatory practices, With public transit that allows you to go shopping, or anyplace without a car, With access and services for elderly citizens, and opportunities for children, With wetlands restored to their natural state, With shops and meeting places serving the needs of residents, With neighborhoods in which people view each other with respect and tolerance, With schools, parks and recreational facilities where families and friends convene, With a vibrant political health that causes the environmental health of the region. If you stand in your dream of this future Del Mar, and look back to see what we did in 2004 to make this dream come true, you will see the possibility that motivated me to ask for your vote. You can't realize this dream by doing what we have been doing. We need a new mindset on the Council. Please, cast your vote for Michael Winn on November 2. |
