With an anticipated $31 million budget deficit, it takes experience and a track record to ensure that District 2's basic services are protected.
With an anticipated $31 million budget deficit, it takes experience and a track record to ensure that District 2's basic services are protected. I have that experience. City government has traditionally been responsible for providing police and fire safety, and maintaining clean and well-lit streets, sidewalks, and functional sewers. In these times of shrinking resources, I will insist that these direct services remain a top priority of the City for District 2 residents by:

  • Opposing use of any public funds for a baseball stadium unless supported by voters.
  • Stopping City Hall sweetheart deals and insisting that development respect the character of our neighborhoods.
  • Cutting administrative overhead at City Hall, notably outside consultancies, perks/travel, management salaries, and Council budgets as needed.
  • Restoring and expanding park and street maintenance services and jobs. Effectively managing overtime so other essential services and jobs are not negatively impacted.
  • Ensuring that the $200 Million program I co-authored to improve Lake Merritt and the Oakland Estuary is done on time and within budget.

I have publicly stated that my own Council office should be subject to budget cuts, along with citywide management salaries, outside consultants, and administrative overhead.
