In the 20 years since Martha graduated 1st in her class from the University of Cincinnati College of Law, she clerked for U.S. District Judge David S. Porter and, as a Circuit Mediator, settled over 1200 cases on appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Martha was an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Dayton School of Law where she was honored as "Professor of the Year" in 1992. A partner in the law firm Clodfelter & Gutzwiller, Martha was previously associated with Frost & Jacobs. Martha appears regularly in Hamilton County Municipal, Common Pleas, and Domestic Relations Courts, representing clients in criminal, civil and family law matters. She is also an Arbitrator in Common Pleas Court. Martha is Vice Chair of the Women Lawyer's Committee of the Cincinnati Bar Association, a member of the Access to Justice Committee of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Cincinnati Lawyers Club, and the American Association of Immigration Lawyers. While in law school, Martha was a Law Review and Human Rights Quarterly editor and contributor; she was a Human Rights Fellow, won several academic prizes, and was inducted into Order of the Coif. Prior to law school, Martha earned a PhD in Political Science from Brown University and graduated with Honors in Government from Skidmore College. For a decade, Martha taught political science at the University of New Mexico, Skidmore College, and other universities. Martha is also an active community leader. At Kilgour Elementary School, she was PTA President, Board member, and volunteer for more than 10 years. Now in her 9th year on the Parent Board of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra, she is serving her second term as President. Martha also served on the Parent Board at Walnut Hills High School where she volunteered in many capacities. Martha recently joined the Board of the Friends of the Harriet Beecher Stowe House and she has volunteered at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati Historical Society, and the Contemporary Arts Center. A descendant of Jakob Gut, a baker who emigrated from Austria to Over-the-Rhine in 1869, Martha is the mother of Jacob Adams (24), Peter Adams (22) and Elizabeth Adams (17). Jacob and Peter are graduates of Walnut Hills High School and Oberlin College; Elizabeth is a senior at Walnut Hills where she ranks at the top of her class. Martha's husband of 29 years is David Adams, Professor of Voice at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. |
