Public Meetings and Complying with the Brown ActBy Vicki Walker ZumwaltCandidate for Director; Ambrose Recreation and Park District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Ensuring Ambrose Directors comply with the law and allow the public to speak freely in an open meeting. The current Ambrose Board of Directors have on several occassions broken the law by not complying with the Brown Act. The Brown Act ensures the publics right to speak on items both not on the agenda and on the agenda, usually allowing the speaker 3 minutes on a topic. I have been present at Ambrose Recreation and Park Board meetings when speakers were told that "unless they had something new to say and that had not been stated on the issue previously, to please sit down". Should I become elected to a Director position I would bring a level of knowledge to the board regarding the Brown Act laws. Having served as the Chair for the Bay Point Municipal Advisory Council this year and over the previous 4 years as a council member I have attended yearly training sessions on the Brown Act and have operated the board under the law. Currently the Ambrose Recreation and Park Board hold committee meetings during the afternoon, when often the public cannot always attend due to their work schedules. I would ensure that committee meetings were held during times when the public if interested could attend. |
