Meeting with Principals and Teachers
I have been a Director of the Bakersfield City School District Educational Foundation for 6 yrs. I have visited schools in the district with programs like "Lunch with *Ed"
- Education, I bring business people to lunch with the students in the school cafeteria and engage students in informal talks about the guest perspective careers always ending in a message to stay in school and stay out of trouble. I have created chess grants for the schools and encourage schools to start chess clubs to assist schools to prepare students to focus and concentrate.I would like to see chess intergrated into the school curriculums through various classes i.g, Reading, Math and Library study.
I think it is essential to meet with the educators to get their perspective on issues and problems that effect them.
I was flabbergasted that every school principal told me that they have never had a visit to their school by a Board of Trustees member. The schools have fallen into a state of disrepair which is unacceptable to me, now there is a need to pass a bond measure, Bond Measure G to fix something that could have been maintained at a lesser expense. In the 6 yrs I have been visiting schools I have seen the slow deterioration of schools. The Board of Trustees owe it to the students and the community to be more responsible stewarts.
