Mayor Pro Tem Sukhee Kang 's career in business and public service is an American success story. Born and raised in South Korea , Sukhee and his wife, Joanne, came to the United States in 1977 after graduating from Korea University in Seoul . From that point forward, he has dedicated his life's work to bettering not only himself, but also those in Southern California 's ever growing Korean American community. Sukhee began his career with Circuit City Stores, Inc. in sales and customer service. While there, he demonstrated his disciplined work ethic and dedication to excellence, he was promoted to upper management positions and continued to receive merits for his management skills, leadership, and most of all, his philosophy in satisfying the customers. In his 15-year career with Circuit City , he received the company's highest honor and was inducted into the "Colonel's Club" for his success and contribution to the company. This story not only highlights Sukhee's incredible drive and talent, but also provides the background for his service to the Korean American community. He has served as Chairman of the Korean American Coalition Orange County , and as President of the Korean American Scholarship Foundation's Western Region. He served on the California Water Quality Control board, Santa Ana Region, on the California Workforce Investment Board, and in the City of Irvine , he served as Finance Commissioner. In the November 2004 election, Sukhee was elected to the Irvine City Council. Respected by his council colleagues, he was elected Mayor Pro Tem for 2005 and 2006. He is now serving as board member on the Orange County Great Park Board, Redevelopment Agency, Orange County Sanitation District, Executive Steering Committee at the League of California Cities Orange County Division, Korea Town Youth and Children Center and Measure M Super Committee. His priorities as Councilmember are in education, business and open government. He was recently honored the Community Leadership Award by the Asian Pacific Islanders Heritage Council of Orange County. His long career in business has provided him with extensive experience in managing, training, organizing and motivating others. In addition to being a successful businessman, he has served his community honorably in the hopes that others will gain by his example. Sukhee lives in Northpark Square , with his wife Joanne, and two children; Alan, a graduate of U.C. San Diego working as Research Scientist at Johnson & Johnson; and Angie is attending UC Berkeley's Boalt Law School . |
