Measure Q - 1/2 cent sales tax increaseBy Janice PetersCandidate for Mayor; City of Morro Bay | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
I support the sales tax increase, from 7.25% to 7.75%, which will be paid by our visitors also, as a means of providing revenue the State cannot take away.Over the past 12 years, the State has taken away close to $8 million dollars of revenue from Morro Bay. Were it not for these takeaways, our budget would be healthy and our streets would be well-paved. This 1/2 cent increase, much of which will be paid by our visitors, will raise Morro Bay's rate to the level of 85% of the cities in California (Santa Maria's sales tax rate has been 7.75% for 17 years.) The approximately $750,000+ in additional annual revenue will allow us to provide financing to replace our main fire station and upgrade the north Morro Bay station; replace our aging fire trucks and other emergency equipment; and repair our streets and storm drains. A citizens oversight committee would insure that this additional revene would be used for these purposes and not to increase salaries for city staff. What will it cost you? 5 cents on a $10 purchase...50 cents on a $100 purchase. What if the voters don't approve Measure Q? Our infrastructure will continue to deteroriate and our city services will continue to be reduced to balance our budget. |
