Position StatementBy Tom ChangnonCandidate for County Superintendent of Schools; County Board of Education | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
We should continue the successful programs already offered by the Stanislaus County Office of Education. But there is more we can do.My decision to become a candidate for Superintendent of the Stanislaus County Office of Education is a result of my continuing passion to help young people reach their full potential. I am committed to educators making a lasting difference in the lives of our youth. My conviction about the importance of our schools has spanned my career of over thirty years as a Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and finally my most recent eight years as Superintendent of Keyes Union School District. I believe in America's mission to educate all of its youth and to produce a citizenry who can readily function in society. The challenges for Education are more diverse than ever, and we must take thoughtful action to reach our desired achievements. We should maintain the successful programs already established in the Stanislaus County Office of Education and continue to support the fine staff that does such an excellent job. Programs like the Academic Decathlon, Youth Entertainment Stage Company (YES), Mock Trials, and Outdoor Education provide opportunities for students to participate in unique experiences. However, there is more we can do. My vision includes increasing school partnerships with parents through parent education programs (Parent Institute for Quality Education), building stronger ties to the Business Community by introducing more specific vocational programs, and helping each student build their own life through character education programs. As Superintendent, I have established programs designed to attain these goals and others, such as the First Amendment School Project, the Reality Education Program, and the Family/Community Forum. These programs encourage a closer relationship between the schools and their communities, and help students learn the skills of socialization and the American Spirit of Freedom and Community Service. To attain this vision and keep our schools strong and productive, we must meet the challenge of the bottom line of our financial resources. My commitment is to constantly keep the economic sacrifice of the Stanislaus County taxpayer in mind and be a worthy steward, exercise my best judgment, and save in the most productive ways possible. Together we can make the vision of continually improving the education of our youth a reality. The demands on our schools have never been greater. It will take the best teamwork we can deliver to produce a comprehensive educational experience for our children. Success in reaching our goals will help us keep America prepared for the exciting challenges we face. Sincerely, Tom Changnon |
