  • Listen in order to identify our immediate needs and long-term concerns.

Solid decisions are made by listening to the people who have their finger on the pulse of our schools -- students, parents, faculty and staff. Period.

  • Continue efforts to secure funding to improve our schools.

Budgets are tight everywhere: in schools, in government, in business and in our homes. I have 26 years experience serving in leadership positions where fund-raising was and is a primary focus. I have extensive experience in securing grants and sponsorships, and organizing events, from calling prospective donors to writing grant applications.

My success includes $350,000 for youth programs and facility improvements at the Arcata Community Pool, $215,000 raised in the single largest benefit auction for HSU Athletics, and a $4.5 million grant to establish the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center in Eureka that was dedicated in September 2007. Adequate funding of our schools will not solve all of our problems, but it sure will help.

  • Enrich academics by cultivating passionate teachers.

We must continue to recruit the type of experienced, enthusiastic, quality teachers my kids were inspired by at Arcata High School. Then we must keep those teachers through the most obvious and apparent means -- competitive salaries, continued training, conference attendance, community recognition and access to instructional resources to keep our teachers passionate about our kids.
