To lead a city, one must know the needs of the residents and how to facilitate resolution.
Having been raised with the belief that you give without keeping track, taking credit for volunteer community work is difficult. Yet I realize that this is how you, the voter, can best see who I am and what I am about. So please accept my humble acknowledgement of my 2007 community involvement in this partial list below:
- Community Emergency Response Team: Participated for a second time in this training. Moderator CERT YAHOO GROUP Board, Design CERT Brochure, Day In The Park Booth Scheduling.
- Trivia Challenge: To benefit our Library Project Read Program, I have been instrumental in putting a team together to showcase The ELKS #2091, where I am the Public Relations Chair.
- Community Preservation Task Force: Participated in monthly meetings, Worked the E-Waste Event in the rain for two days at our Fire Station, Talked to neighbors door to door regarding our June Clean Up Event in the Juniper, Cedar, and 9th Lane area, Solicited raffle prizes for this event, Cleaned and hauled garbage, and helped organize information booths.
- Grand Avenue Subcommittee Meetings: Having initially started meetings with merchants on Grand Avenue prior to a subcommittee being formed, I have attended a major amount of these monthly meetings and continue to meet independently with our local Merchants.
- Historic Old Town Homeowners and Renters Association: Accepted Vice President position, attended regular meetings and was instrumental in working up agendas and neighborhood attendance. Represented HOTHRA at a lecture with Dr. Emmett Carlson, Peninsula/Silicon Community Foundation.
- Worked with neighborhood groups including Avalon Park, Brentwood, Pecks Lot, and Paradise Valley. Signage, signals, reflectors worked with DPW, Traffic Advisory Committee.
- Presented to City Council: U.S. Mayor's Agreement on Climate Control. Mayor Greg Nichols of Seattle created this in response to Pres. Bush's refusal to sign the Kyoto agreement. Mayor Nichols requested all cities and Mayors to sign on to this commitment. Our council unanimously agreed and signed this agreement.
- Paradise Valley Meetings: Held meetings in my home for neighbors to discuss recent break ins happening in this area. Residents' complaints of safety, noise, and traffic concerns were recorded. I assisted in creating a PowerPoint Presentation to accompany over 200 signatures we received from neighbors regarding these issues. Presented this before our City Council.
- Citizen's Action Team: Helped with paper work to reduce the backlog and free our Code Enforcement to focus on life and property issues of greater concern.
- Improve Public Lands: Adopted Avalon Park to help maintain garden areas with my Pink Ladies/Red Hat Society.
- Military Salute: Chaired a Military Salute event at the ELKS #2091 in honor of our Vets and recent returnees from the Middle East.
- Cooperstown Fog City Team: Coordinated efforts with City Staff to have our young representatives of our city acknowledged before our City Council.
- Treatment Plant: Coordinated a seminar for managers of our Sewage Treatment Plant highlighting potential benefits of Dry Ice Paint Removal in place of Sandblasting our tanks.
- SSF Citizen's Academy: Completed the 12 week Academy which features each city department and how each department works.
- Attended many, many events within this great city, and paid my own way while doing so.
