Responses to Piedmonter QuestionsBy June MonachCandidate for Governing Board Member; Piedmont Unified School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The Piedmonter posed questions of school board candidates, informing us that responses would be published in the February 29 issue in the election section of the newspaper. Included in the full text are the questions and my responses.1. What are the major issues facing the school board in the next four years? We want every student to be inspired and engaged in their learning. I see ongoing investment in professional development as a powerful way to address this goal for the benefit of all students. Given the state budget situation, a second challenge is adequate funding of Piedmont's K-12 program. Since approximately 70 percent of our $28 million budget comes from state and federal revenues, we must urge state leaders to repair the current state financing system. Locally, we must continue to exercise fiscal discipline, be creative, and earn community support for our educational program. A third challenge will be to form a construction management team to implement the bond program within the $56 million authorization and to seek state modernization funds for which PUSD may be eligible (an estimated $7-11 million). 2. Do you agree with projected Measure E projects and expenditures to date? Yes. Funds have been used to develop a comprehensive plan to address projects with the greatest deficiencies first, and to reduce seismic risks at PHS by installing a lighter temporary roof over the Quad building and at Havens by relocating students to portables. 3. Is the school district doing its part to "go green"? What steps could be taken to enhance sustainability? Yes, through increased use of web-based communications and student registration, we have reduced annual paper consumption throughout the district. A variety of conservation efforts also are visible at every school, including an exciting solar panel pilot project at Beach Elementary School. District staff is working with the City in implementing improvements to its recycling and waste management contract. For Measure E construction, the district's architect plans to use sustainability guidelines for design and materials selection. 4. Finally, what are your goals as an elected official? Building upon 15 years of experience in the schools and during my first term, continue to: 1) Promote enthusiasm for learning and student growth; 2) Fully fund a comprehensive K-12 educational program; and 3) Ensure that school facilities are safe and well-maintained. |
