I think it is vitally important for the local governing board to promote and protect the common good through informed and respectful civic engagement in the democratic process.

Effective school board governance requires vision, commitment, perspective, and the ability to set goals and make decisions in the best interests of all students after considering a broad range of viewpoints. These are qualities I believe I bring to the Board.

In addition, open and purposeful dialogue is essential in ensuring that a relevant and rigorous educational program is provided to all students in safe, well-maintained facilities. Over the past 15 years and in my first term of office, I have worked to inspire participation in collaborative efforts such as the:

  • PUSD Long-term Planning Team
  • Annual District Goal-Setting Process
  • District's Curriculum Council
  • District's Budget Advisory Committee
  • Citizens Advisory Group in Support of the School Parcel Tax
  • Bond Program Committees including the Public Engagement, Citizens Oversight, Technical Advisory, and Bond Steering Committees
  • Community Workshops on the Bond Program and Civic Center Master Plan

I have three primary goals for our school system:

1. Promote student growth and the pursuit of educational excellence by:

  • Providing a breadth of learning opportunities for students
  • Supporting ongoing professional development for educators

2. Fully fund Piedmont's educational program by:
  • Exercising fiscal discipline
  • Advocating for adequate funding from the State
  • Earning renewed support from the community for the school parcel tax and for sustained giving to fundraising campaigns

3. Address safety and maintenance needs of school facilities by:
  • Pursuing a clear course of action to implement the bond program
  • Investing taxpayer dollars for long-term benefit
