My goal is to protect our borders and improve Mexico's economy to create well-paying jobs.I support today's plans to strengthen the U.S. borders with the virtual fence now being implemented. But I also believe a more aggressive approach should be taken with the Mexican government to create a better economic environment in that country to generate comparable paying jobs to those available in the U.S. I will advocate an increase in economic aid to Mexico that would concentrate on improving the job opportunities available to its citizens. This could include expanding the "maquiladora" program to allow all goods manufactured within 100 miles of the border to come into the U. S. without imposition of a tariff. This strategy would be costly but reasonable relative to the current costs of providing health care, education, and social services for illegal immigrants. If modifying maquiladora is insufficient to create jobs in Mexico, then other U.S. supported income tax incentives provided to manufacturing companies south of the border should be considered. |
