We have a unique opportunity to grow our economy even in difficult economic times through the renegotiated agreement with the Dunes Developer.
The City of Marina has a unique opportunity to achieve true economic diversity in a region that is dominated by 3 major industries; tourism, agriculture, and hospitality. The closure of Ft. Ord gives us the ability to house new industries that compliment the character of the region, i.e.; green building technologies, clean energy technologies and other research driven industries. In difficult economic times it is even more important to recognize the need for a diverse economy as it is through diversity that an economy can continue to grow in one or more sectors while other sectors go through downturns. We have learned through hard experience that a city's economy cannot be solely dependent on one industry for its survival. We have the ability to draw from the intellectual pool created by our proximity to MPC and CSUMB as well as other colleges in the region for local jobs in developing industries. We are able to do this despite the downturn in the economy because we were able to negotiate an agreement to resume the Dunes project. Through this agreement the developer assumes the risks and we receive the benefits. This development creates much needed construction jobs that will be followed by a variety of other jobs. Revenue is created that will pay for the services the citizens of Marina expect and deserve.
