Teacher
Rod was a career employee for Montebello Unified School District. For the first ten years, he taught fourth, fifth and sixth grade and was elected President of the Montebello Teachers' Association in 1968. As President, Rod led the only walkout in Montebello schools' history to date.
Site Administrator
In 1972 he was promoted to principal at Bell Gardens Elementary School. In 1980, Rod became principal of Montebello Intermediate School serving there until 1985. During his tenure, the school was honored as a California Distinguished School. It was also recognized as one of the United States' Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence for the 1983-84 school year. To date, it is the only Blue Ribbon award in the history of Montebello schools. In 1985, Rod became principal of Montebello High School and served in that capacity until 1997. While serving at school sites, Rod received the Honorary Service Award and Continuing Service Award, both presented by the PTA.
District Office Administrator
Until his retirement, Rod served as an Administrative Assistant to the Business Manager. His initial responsibility was the passage of a $92 million bond which passed by a wide margin with nearly 75% of the vote in its favor. With its passage, the scope of Rod's responsibilities broadened to include implementation of the bond monies as well as overseeing several of the district's departments including Transportation, Maintenance & Operations and Facilities Planning. He also served as the chief of the school district's police department.
Advocate for Administrators
Following his retirement on June 30, 2000, Rod joined the staff of the Association of California School Administrators. One of only six advocates throughout California, their major responsibility is to work with school administrators in an effort to resolve issues, arbitrate between parties and reach amicable agreements that will ultimately benefit students.
Community Involvement
Rod has served on the site councils for Fanning Elementary and Brea Junior High schools. Since 2001, Rod has served as the treasurer for the Brea Olinda High School Instrumental Music Boosters. He was elected to the Board of Education in 2004 and served as clerk in 2007. In 2008, his fellow board members voted to elect him President of the Board. As a board member, Rod represents the school district on the city's Family Resource Center Advisory council.
