Assemblymember Mike Davis was elected to serve the 48th District in November of 2006. The 48th AD represents 40% of the 26th Senatorial District. Located in Los Angeles County,the district is home to a myriad of diverse communities. Assemblymember Davis is committed to education, health care and environmental reform, economic development and transportation.He was recently appointed by Speaker Karen Bass to the LA Coliseum Commission. Assemblymember Davis is Chair of the Committee on Arts, Entertainment,Sports, Tourism and Internet Media.He also Chairs the Select Committee on Rail Transportation and also serves on Rules, Appropriations and Environmental Safety & Toxic Materials committees. Assemblymember Davis authored or co-authored 12 pieces of legislation signed by the Governor including bills on career technical education, elder abuse, graffiti removal, supplier diversity, notaries public, high speed rail, and integrity in musical performances.He also received a rating of 100 from California Alliance for Retired Americans, Congress of california seniors, California national Organization for Women and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California. Prior to being elected, Assemblymember Davis served as Senior Deputy to Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke in the Second District of the County of Los Angeles. He was liaison for Los Angeles County Union Negotiations, Veterans Affairs and Special Events. In addition, he also reported to the Supervisor regarding constituent services in the South Los Angeles County area. Mike Davis also served as a member of the National Council for the American Society for Public Administrators, a District Director to Congresswoman Maxine Waters and worked with her in this capacity while she was a member of the California Legislature. He was delegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention for Los Angeles and has served as Regional Director for Bill Clinton for President Campaign in the General Election. He served as Project Coordinator for President Clinton's California Primary Fundraiser. He also was elected as a delegate to the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles; and in 2004, elected as member of the Democratic National Committee and served as a Superdelegate to the Democratic National Committee in Boston, Massachusetts. Assemblymember Davis is founder of The Images of Blacks in America Symposium at U.C.L.A. which is a conference for students of high school, college and professionals. The purpose of this conference is to raise the awareness of African Americans in the fields of Health, Economics, Education, Politics, and the Mass Media. Mike served as Chairman of the Western Regional Social Action Committee of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and past member of the National Social Action Commission. He served as Vice President of the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter as well as the Black Advisory Committee to the Los Angeles Police Department Commission. He also serves as a member of the California Democratic State Central Committee,Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee, and is Past President of New Frontier Democratic Club. Currently, he is the only African American member on the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation Board of Directors which houses the first West Coast Frank Lloyd Wright Property-the Hollyhock House, and the Los Angeles Municipal Art Center. In 1980, he was appointed Los Angeles Coordinator for the Martin Luther King National Holiday Committee by Congressman John Conyers. Mr. Davis is listed as an Outstanding Young Man of America in 1981 and 1996 in recognition of outstanding professional achievement, superior leadership ability and exceptional service to the community. In 1998, he was selected as a member of the American Swiss Foundation's Young Leader Program, which was held in Basel, Switzerland. He is also listed in Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in America,Who's Who in the World. He was 2004 "Democrat of the Year" for the 48th District, (LA County Democratic Party); and was recently awarded the prestigious 2005 Will Baughman Award by the American Society for Public Administration. He received his Bachelor's Degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a Masters of Public Administration Degree from California State University at Northridge, and a Masters of Arts Degree in Behavioral Science with a concentration in Negotiations and Conflict Management from California State University at Dominguez Hills. He also completed Innovations in Governance Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Mike Davis has helped raise over $1 million dollars for Democratic candidates such as: President Bill Clinton, U.S. Senate Candidate Harvey Gantt, U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, and U. S. Senator Barack Obama. He has coordinated fundraisers and community programs for many entertainers as well. Mike is the author of an unpublished theses, "Administrative and Legal Challenges for Public Funding," (1994); and wrote "Dr. Thomas Yoshikawa: Leadership by Example," (1997) in the Minorities in Business Magazine. |
