Sheriff Joe McGinn is a lifelong resident of Delaware County. Currently serving his fifth year as Delaware County Sheriff, McGinn has a record of working to make the Sheriff's Office more responsive to the needs of local residents while also cutting costs in various programs to maintain a balanced budget. Through his fiscal responsibility, he has helped to keep county taxes low for the citizens Delaware Counties. McGinn also established a "Dead Beat Dad" warrant sweep to collect unpaid child support and has overseen drug education programs through DARE in our local schools. In order to ensure we are prepared on the county level to respond to domestic terrorism and other threats to the safety of residents, McGinn attended and graduated from the prestigious Homeland Security Executive Leadership Program at the Naval Post Graduate College. Under his leadership, the department has upgraded training for deputy sheriff's and acquired enhanced department equipment to improve efficiencies and provided additional safety. McGinn also established an explosive detective K-9 team and rolled out a gun safety program to help reduce gun violence and gun-related accidents. He helped to create the Southeast Pennsylvania Sheriff's Caucus which has helped to reduce costs and improve services through the utilization of synergies across county lines. McGinn is also a member of the National Sheriff's Association Homeland Security Committee. In addition, in the wake of the current economic condition and rise in foreclosures, McGinn launched an educational program to make homeowners aware of their rights and options under the law, as well as state and federal programs that can help them avoid foreclosure. He served his country in the United States Army and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. In recognition of his service, McGinn was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. Active in the local community, McGinn is the founder of the Sheriff's Run for Scholarships, which has raised more than $50,000 for scholarships at local schools through the Delaware County Hero Scholarship Fund. Sheriff McGinn has also served as an Associate Professor at Delaware County Community College and a Commissioner in his hometown of Lower Chichester from 1988 until 2001. A graduate of Sun Valley High School, McGinn earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Temple University and Masters of Education from Cheyney University. McGinn and his wife Judie have two children, Joe, Jr. and Kellie. |
