Smart Voter Full Biography for William "Bill" Rumble

Candidate for
Member, Democratic Party County Central Committee; County of Los Angeles; Assembly District 45

This information is provided by the candidate

My name is Bill Rumble and I am a candidate for a position on the Los Angeles County Democratic Party Central Committee from the 45th Assembly District. I thank you for your consideration of my candidacy. I would be honored to receive your vote.

I am a retired public school teacher. For 29 years, I worked as a social studies, English, and English as a Second Language teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. 24 of those years were at LA Wilson High in the northeast Los Angeles community of El Sereno. My daughter is a 2001 graduate of Wilson. For the last seven years of my career, I served as Wilson's bilingual program coordinator. I speak both English and Spanish. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked three years for the LA County Department of Public Social Services as an eligibility worker. From 1968 to 1970, I was an officer in the US Navy. I served two tours of duty in the Vietnam Combat Zone.

Like my father before me, I believe in the right of working men and women to organize and bargain collectively with their employers. That's why my dad joined the Oil and Chemical Workers Union in the 1930s. It's why I joined AFSCME and SEIU Local 535 when I worked for the County. It's also why I joined United Teachers of Los Angeles in 1974 and why I continue my union affiliation, as a retired teacher. I also happen to believe that union members should work hard to support each other. That's why I served eight years on the UTLA House of Representatives and six years as chapter chair of the Wilson High chapter of UTLA. I am especially proud of my service as Picket Captain during the May 1989 teachers' strike against the LA Unified School District. 90% of Wilson's teachers went out on strike and stayed out- the highest percentage of support among east Los Angeles high schools.

I grew up in a Democratic household. My parents were "Roosevelt Democrats." As a 14-year-old, I heard President Kennedy speak at a union rally in my home town of Long Beach. I have worked in Democratic campaigns since 1962 when, as a 15-year-old, I volunteered in the Pat Brown for Governor campaign. Since retirement, I have redoubled my efforts. I am a member of the California Democratic Party Central Committee. I serve on the state party's Labor and Veterans' Caucuses and am secretary of the latter. I also serve on the LA County Democratic Party Central Committee (where I sit on the Candidate Interview Committee.) I am the immediate Past President of the Northeast Democratic Club of Los Angeles. In 2008, the California Democratic Council named the Northeast Democrats its Club of the Year. Also in 2008, I served as Campaign Manager of the Northeast Democratic Obama for President campaign headquarters. In recognition of this and other efforts, the LA County Democratic Party named me its "Democrat of the Year in the 45th Assembly District" in 2009.

I am married to Los Angeles City Commissioner Carol Jacques. We live in Mount Washington, a neighborhood in the northeast of Los Angeles. We have three children- Lawrence, Mateo, and Maya.
