Political Philosophy for Stephen Samuel "Steve" Winkler
Candidate for |

|
I believe that government must act for the people, because it belongs to the people. The political philosophy of the New Deal was based on this concept of the government being a partner of business, labor, and all of the different elements of our society. No other administration used this approach more effectively than the administration of Bill Clinton. Here was a president, who recognized that there were still some forgotten members of our society, who lacked the promise of our Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, "with liberty and justice for all." For example, the gays and lesbians suffer discrimination, because our country has not matured enough to accept alternative life styles. However, President Clinton has worked hard to correct this injustice. I believe that there are four principle methods to the solution of a problem. The first approach creates the problem. For example, the Dingley Tariff under President McKinley raised tariff rates to 46%. This was inflation creation and our working class suffered immensely. Our next president, Theodore Roosevelt ignored the problem. This second approach, is still the major Republican approach used today. His successor, William Howard Taft used the third approach. The Payne-Aldrich Tariff lowered the rates to 41%. He did something, but not enough to relieve the sufferings of our working poor. Sometimes we feel that our government is not doing enough and sometimes I feel the same way. Woodrow Wilson lowered the rates to 27% and this fourth approach is the kind of leadership that can be considered GREAT! I believe in a government that recognizes inefficiency and does something about it. For example, President Wilson recognized that our banking system was inefficient and the result was the Federal Reserve Banking System that we still use today. I believe in consumer protection and the prosecution of business, whenever there is unfair competition and unethical practices. In this spirit, President Wilson established the Federal Trade Commission and signed into law the Clayton Anti-Trust Act. I love children, otherwise I would have no business being employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District as one of their teachers. Our President loved children too, and President Wilson was the first United States president to take children off of our farms and out of our factories and into our schools. There were no effective child labor legislation before the Wilson Administration. I'm a member of the United Teachers of Los Angeles and consider myself pro-labor. Pro-labor does not mean that an Administration calls for an arbitration after a strike has been declared. Incidentally, in this connection, President Theodore Roosevelt used this approach during the Anthracite Coal Miners' Strike. On the contrary, it means that you work hard to alleviate the grievances to prevent a strike. That is being pro-active. That is called the Adamson Act to alleviate the sufferings of our railroad workers. That is what President Wilson did for you. I also believe that we should demand respect for the United States of America and that is what President Wilson did, when Mexico disrespected our country. When they refused to salute our flag, our President landed troops at Vera Cruz. Our president should not bow down to any foreign ruler or leader; on the contrary, they should bow down to our President. Finally, we should become the beacon, for the light, of moral leadership. President Wilson worked hard to "keep us out of war," but when war was inevitable, our President made it absolutely clear, that victory was not enough for us. We were fighting for a world vision. For example, we would not consent to the annexation of the territory of our enemy, Germany, by our friend, France. Woodrow Wilson insisted that the Rhineland belonged to the German people and justice demanded that it remain in German hands. We, ourselves, wanted no territorial gains for our country. Our president only wanted universal peace and justice for the entire world. If you have just read an outline of the Wilson Administration, then you have become familiar with the Winkler Political Philosophy. Winkler believes that our three greatest presidents were Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Bill Clinton, and Woodrow Wilson. On my website, I have already paid tribute to President Roosevelt and you will find his active supporters at every Democratic meeting. I have also listed the major accomplishments and achievements of President Clinton on my website. Now it is time to give some recognition to our third greatest president. What these three presidents advocated is what I advocate. These three administrations sums up my political philosophy. It is what I expect from our leadership and it is what I will work hard for, if you decide to elect me as your representative to the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee. |
