Supervisor Janet Wolf was elected to the Board of Supervisors in November 2006. A Southern California native, Janet Wolf earned a B.S. Degree from UCSB, before earning a Master's Degree and teaching credential from UCLA. After teaching in San Francisco, she and her family moved to Goleta in 1981. In 1983 Janet began working in the field of vocational rehabilitation first at a private consulting firm where Janet became the managing counselor. In 1987 she opened her own business with offices in both Santa Barbara and Santa Maria. Janet earned a reputation as an effective and compassionate consultant who helped return hundreds of people back to work. Always working to make her community better, Janet Wolf was actively involved in the public schools her three daughters attended. She began her career in public service 1993 when she was elected to the Goleta School Board. She served for three terms, and concluded her service in 2005. As a School Board Member, Janet was instrumental in developing a district-wide recycling program, reducing pesticides in district schools, ensuring the enforcement of non-discrimination policies and maintaining fiscal integrity and excellent instruction during difficult budget times. Janet served as the Board liaison in negotiation with Goleta teachers for approximately six consecutive years, implementing "interest based bargaining" that put the education of our children first. An active member and supporter of numerous local community-based, philanthropic and environmental organizations, Janet was a founding member of the Jewish-Latino Roundtable in Santa Barbara. She served several years as Goleta's representative on the Santa Barbara County School Boards Association, including two years as President. Janet wasl also appointed as the Second District representative on the County Board for school district reorganization. Janet served six years on the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Board and twelve years with the Santa Barbara Chapter of National Charity League, serving as President in each organization during her tenure. Supervisor Wolf has advocated for issues of concern to women and children's health, safety, and education. Congresswoman Lois Capps invited Janet to testify at a U.S. Congressional hearing on women and heart disease in Washington D.C., and Janet worked with Assemblyman Pedro Nava to ensure all women have access to digital mammograms in Santa Barbara County. She continues to be a strong advocate for women's health, promoting healthy diets and exercise while serving as a spokesperson for WomenHeart. Supervisor Wolf was honored by Girls Inc. of Carpinteria in 2009 as a "Woman of Inspiration" for the work she had done on behalf of girls and women. Supervisor Wolf met her husband, Harvey, in junior high school and married him after they both completed college. They have been married 33 years and have three daughters, Jessica 29, Stephanie 26 and Kim 22. |
