Supervisor Michael Rubio was born and raised in the Central Valley. In March 2004, Supervisor Michael Rubio was elected to represent the Fifth District in Kern County and, at the time, became the youngest elected supervisor in California. Within his first term in office, Supervisor Rubio spearheaded the largest infrastructure project in Kern County history, securing hundreds of jobs for local citizens. Supervisor Rubio has also worked to combat gang violence within Kern County. The Gang Violence Strategic Plan, authored by Supervisor Michael Rubio, was the only program in the Central Valley recognized nationally by the National Association of Counties with a "2008 Achievement Award." Supervisor Rubio attended public schools, including Shafter High School and Bakersfield College. He received his bachelor's degree at the University of New Haven. He was also awarded the prestigious John F. Kennedy Jr. Leadership Award from the California Democratic Party and the German Marshall Memorial Fellowship from the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Recently, Supervisor Rubio received the Kern COG Regional Award of Merit- Distinguished Leadership / Elected Official and completed the Senior Executives in State and Local Government program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Supervisor Rubio currently makes his home in East Bakersfield with his wife, Dora, their daughter, Iliana and their chocolate lab, Levi. |
