Increased parental involvement in all LJSD student policy decisions is essential. No one knows what is better for their child than a parent. Why should their education be any different? Increased parent participation at all LJSD meetings is what is needed. This is something I have advocated for in the past, and will continue to do so if I am elected.
Parents should and need to be involved with the decision making not only at the classroom level but the district level as well. Parents should attend at least some of the school board meetings in order to stay current on and have input about what decisions are being made that directly affect their children and their education. As a board member, as I do currently as a parent, I will continue to encourage parent involvement at the district level including recommending regular participation at meetings. The LJSD community is rather small compared to many other school districts in the county and state. I believe this is one of our greatest strengths. Many of us parents know each other, stay informed, and are actively involved with the formal education of their children. This should not stop at home or in the classroom. Parents in the LJSD should continue to exert influence on the superintendent and the school board, by exercising their will and authority as both parents and taxpayers. We need to return the stewardship of our children's education back to the parents. If I'm elected to the school board, I will not only welcome parental opinion but will advocate for increased parental participation.
