Matthew Roberts began public service as an ocean lifeguard in 1980. He graduated from UCSB with a degree in Business Economics the same year. He has served as a California Avocado Commissioner, treasurer of the California Lifesaving Association, and as the City of Carpinteria's Parks and Recreation Director
