Measure XBy Bobbi Jo ChavarriaCandidate for Mayor; City of Fontana | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
No on Measure X. Yes to community groups raising funds with the sale of safe and sane fireworks.I side with the community organizations and youth groups who rely on the funds raised with sale of safe and sane fireworks to continue their good work, and I side with the community at-large who would like to enjoy a 4th of July celebration at home or with neighbors. No, on Measure X. Yes, on safe and sane fireworks. I understand the public safety concerns over the use of illegal and dangerous fireworks in our city and will work with community members, schools and groups to ensure education about the proper use of safe and sane fireworks and I support a strong enforcement policy against the use of illegal fireworks to keep our communities safe. However, I see Measure X as an expensive attempt by a few to get what they want over the will of the people of Fontana. As Mayor I will not attempt to circumvent the voice of the people. Groups and other residents spoke out against the ordinance banning the sale of fireworks and were very clear they wanted the sale of safe and sane fireworks to continue in our city. Others refused to take a stand in support of the community, only voting against the ordinance because it would have forced an immediate special election that would have cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now on the ballot in the regular election, this measure still has an added cost to the election costs that could have been avoided if our elected officials had simply stood with the community groups and twenty-thousand plus residents who signed the petition for the ballot measure in the first place. |
