Ensure our city works for everyone

The lack of a number of public commissions has left the decision-making and local-government process less transparent with fewer people involved.
ESTABLISH or RE-ESTABLISH VITAL PUBLIC COMMISSIONS

With the growth our city has experienced these last two decades, we need more people at the decision-making table, not less. Currently, the city only has two commissions: the Planning Commission and the Parks and Recreation Commission, and many feel the appointment process has left far too many out.

I will champion the establishment and in some cases, re-establishment of essential commissions and advisory councils with many more people from the community to solve and provide input into some of our most pressing areas including:

  • youth educational success,
  • small-business support,
  • task force on bringing quality jobs to our city
  • expanding access to higher education and vocational training
  • establishing a partnership with surrounding areas and agencies to ensure safe water by addressing percholorate, lead, and other contamination issues at the source
  • aggressively reducing energy consumption for residents and the city with a citywide energy conservation retrofit program
  • ensuring sustainability by relieving heavy traffic congestion with the development of walkable communities and neighborhoods
  • and more

Another key area that needs to be addressed is in mitigating the effects of the high rate of foreclosures in our city. The Fontana Housing Authority oversees the neighborhood stabilization program but needs to be doing more to prevent some families from being unfairly foreclosed upon in the first place. As recent news shows, banks have been circumventing the foreclosure process with huge numbers of families, and some foreclosure mitigation funding is supposed to be available for non-profit housing counselors to help homeowners navigate the complex process with their banks. By keeping those whose loans can be modified to an affordable payment in their home, we can stabilize neighborhoods and contain the much higher costs of blight and unsafe, vacant homes in our community, and prevent further depreciation.
